Our local guide to Wotton-Under-Edge

Into wild swimming? Then head on 10 miles down the road to Cromhall Quarry for a unique swimming experience. The former limestone quarry, which is also used by divers and paddle boarders, contains EU protected Great Crested Newts and other interesting wildlife. Perhaps you’ll even spot a monster lurking in the depths – the quarry is home to an impressive array of fossils, including the infamous Cromhall dinosaur. Don’t get too excited though – the dinosaur was only two foot long, weighed less than two pounds and probably ate nothing larger than insects. Definitely not swimmers!

The quarry is near the charming market town of Wotton-under-Edge, which has the Cotswold Way passing through it and a range of pubs, shops, restaurants and schools. There is a seasonal open air swimming pool, a skate park and the Wotton Electric Picture House, one of the first digital cinemas in the UK.

Renishaw, a world leader in precision technology, has its HQ in the town, while buyers travel from all over the country to grab bargains at Wotton Auction Rooms. Wotton is also known for its associations with Sir Isaac Pitman, who developed Pitman Shorthand and was an
early campaigner for vegetarianism.

Once again, lovely countryside and walks surround the town – one we love that combines both fresh air and history is the popular walk through the woods to the Tyndale Monument near North Nibley. The tower can be seen for miles around and was built in honour of local lad William Tyndale. He translated the Bible into English but was unfortunately burnt at the stake in 1536 after being convicted of heresy.

You’ll be pleased to know that was in Brussels not Wotton though – and the town is actually very friendly and welcoming!
